The Problem

The long-outstanding water crisis in Morocco affects millions by depriving communities of safe drinking water, leading to severe health issues and limited education and job opportunity

Causes of the Crisis

  1. Arid Lands
  2. Climate Change
  3. Bulk of Water for Irrigation
  4. Deforestation
  5. Corruption in Government

The World Resources Institute (WRI) indicates that Morocco will reach an extremely high level of water stress by 2040.

Evidence

Since the 1960s, access to water has diminished to less than 600 m3 of water per person annually, from 2,600 m3.

Over the period from September to mid-January 2024, the country recorded a rainfall deficit of 70% compared to the average.

In the last 30 years, Morocco has had a drought every 3 years.
